Is the MRCOOL Advantage 5th Gen 12k a DIY unit?+
No. MRCOOL's limited warranty applies only to systems installed by a state-certified or licensed HVAC contractor, and the flare lineset (sold separately) needs nitrogen testing and evacuation. It is R-454B, an A2L mildly flammable refrigerant. Do not confuse it with the DIY series.
What is the warranty really?+
MRCOOL's page lists 2 years parts and 1 year compressor to the registered owner, with a 1-year remote warranty. Retailer pages disagree on which of parts or compressor gets 2 years, so confirm before buying. A limited lifetime replacement warranty requires registration within 60 days and enrolling in the paid MRCOOL Care program within 4 months of install.
Can it heat a house in winter?+
MRCOOL publishes no low-ambient floor. NEEP certifies 12,000 BTU at 47°F but 8,000 BTU at 5°F, with a COP of 1.91, about two thirds of nameplate. Treat it as mild-climate heat.
Why choose it at about $989?+
The price is low for a 12,000 BTU system with built-in Wi-Fi, 21.3 SEER2 and 9.1 HSPF2. The trade-off is the short base warranty, which is 1 to 2 years against Senville's 5 to 10 or Pioneer's 5.
What size space does it fit?+
MRCOOL lists about 550 sq ft. The lineset is 1/4 in. liquid and 3/8 in. suction, and the breaker is 15A maximum.
