Best forCold-climate homes that want a cold-weather 12k from a mainstream maker without paying Mitsubishi prices.
The 12k LGRED is the size most owners ask about. It is the KSSAL121A system: Art Cool Deluxe indoor unit and a KUSAL121A outdoor unit with LG's cold-climate package, rated 25.5 SEER2, 11.2 HSPF2 and 13.8 EER2 under AHRI certificate 216368960. Heating capacity is 13,000 BTU at the rating point and LG lists operation down to -31°F. At about $2,162 for the system it undercuts Mitsubishi's MSZ-FX12NL by about a thousand dollars on equipment. The indoor unit is as quiet as 21 dB. The tradeoff is a lower HSPF2 than the Mitsubishi; in the cold it does well, with NEEP listing 14,700 BTU/h at 5°F, more than its 13,000 BTU rating at 47°F.
At 5°F it makes more heat than its 47°F rating (113%), according to the certified NEEP listing for this pairing. LG rates it to keep running down to -31°F.
Pairing: KUSAL121A with KNSAL121A. Checked October 8, 2026 on NEEP's ccASHP list; a different head or condenser posts different numbers.
LG lists it for about 550 sq ft. NEEP certifies 13,000 BTU at 47°F, enough for a large bedroom, a living room or a studio in a well-insulated home. Leaky older rooms may want a bigger unit.
NEEP certifies 14,700 BTU at 5°F with a COP of 2.05, which is more than its 47°F rating. LG states operation down to -31°F. It is ENERGY STAR cold climate listed.
At $2,162 it undercuts the Mitsubishi MSZ-FX12NL by about a thousand dollars on equipment, though its 11.2 HSPF2 sits below Mitsubishi's. Against the LG High Efficiency 12k at $1,980, it costs about $180 more and adds heating to -31°F instead of -4°F.
A licensed installer and registration within 60 days of installation. The indoor unit alone is listed at 10-year compressor and 7-year parts. The line set is sold separately.
